Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking: Which Is Better for European Travelers?
Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking: Which Is Better for European Travelers?
This is the question every Africa safari planner eventually faces: Rwanda or Uganda for gorilla trekking? Both countries offer life-changing encounters with mountain gorillas. The differences come down to budget, logistics, comfort preferences and how much time you have. Here is TripCare Adventure’s honest comparison.
Permit Price
Uganda gorilla trekking permit: USD $800 per person. Rwanda gorilla trekking permit: USD $1,500 per person. For a couple, choosing Uganda saves USD $1,400 — enough to fund extra nights or a chimpanzee trekking experience. Uganda also offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience (4 hours with the gorillas, USD $1,500) — Rwanda has no equivalent.
Accessibility
Rwanda wins on accessibility. From Kigali airport, the drive to Volcanoes National Park is approximately 2.5 hours on good roads. Rwanda is compact and easy to navigate. Uganda’s Bwindi is 8–10 hours by road from Entebbe, or 1 hour by charter flight. For travellers with limited time, Rwanda’s shorter transfers are a practical advantage.
The Trekking Experience
Rwanda (Volcanoes NP): Trek begins on open volcanic slopes before entering forest. Generally more accessible terrain with higher altitude (3,000–4,000m for some families). Uganda (Bwindi): Dense equatorial rainforest, steep and atmospheric. Trek duration less predictable but the forest encounter feels wilder and more primordial. Both deliver extraordinary gorilla encounters.
The Wider Safari Context
Uganda offers far more beyond gorillas: Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth’s tree-climbing lions, Kibale chimps, Jinja white-water rafting and 1,061 bird species. Rwanda’s menu is smaller: gorillas, golden monkeys, Nyungwe chimps and Kigali. For a multi-experience East Africa safari, Uganda wins clearly.
Our Recommendation
Choose Rwanda if: you have 4–5 days, prefer luxury lodges, or want the quickest gorilla experience. Choose Uganda if: you want better value, more diverse wildlife, and have 7+ days. Best of all: do both. TripCare Adventure designs combined Uganda–Rwanda itineraries regularly for European travellers.
