Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking: Everything American Travelers Need to Know
Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking: Everything American Travelers Need to Know
If gorilla trekking is Uganda’s headline act, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest is its spectacular supporting performance. Chimpanzees share 98.7% of human DNA — observing them in the wild changes how you see both them and yourself.
Kibale Forest: The Chimp Capital of Africa
Kibale National Park in western Uganda hosts approximately 1,500 chimpanzees — the largest documented chimp population in any protected area in East Africa. The park also hosts 12 other primate species including red colobus, black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkey and L’Hoest’s monkey.
The Chimpanzee Trekking Experience
6:30am briefing at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. Guides explain chimp etiquette (7m distance, no flash). Chimps are fast and noisy — their distant “pant hoots” guide you toward them. When found, energy is electric: a group of 50–100 chimps swinging through the canopy, crashing through undergrowth and occasionally stopping to watch you with evaluating intelligence. 1 hour of observation. Trek duration: 1–4 hours typically (chimps easier to locate than gorillas). Permit cost: USD $200/person.
