Rwanda vs Bwindi: Where Should You Trek Mountain Gorillas?

The two premier gorilla trekking destinations on Earth face each other across the Virunga volcano chain — Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park on one side, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on the other. Which is right for you?

The Gorillas Themselves

Both parks host the same subspecies — Eastern gorillas. The gorillas are biologically identical across both locations. The difference is the setting: Bwindi feels wilder and more primordial (dense ancient rainforest); Volcanoes NP offers dramatic open volcanic slopes before the forest zone.

Permit Cost

Bwindi (Uganda): USD $800. Volcanoes NP (Rwanda): USD $1,500. For a couple, Uganda saves USD $1,400. Uganda also offers the 4-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience (USD $1,500) — Rwanda has no equivalent.

Accessibility

Rwanda wins — 2.5 hours from Kigali on good roads. Bwindi is 8–10 hours by road from Entebbe, or 1 hour by charter flight.

The Wider Context

Uganda offers gorillas plus Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale chimps, Jinja adventures and 1,061 bird species. Rwanda offers gorillas plus golden monkeys, Nyungwe chimps and Kigali. For a multi-experience safari, Uganda wins clearly.
